Welcome to Term 4, as always, we are entering into a very busy term especially for our Grade 6 students who will be involved in a number of exciting end of year celebrations. Teachers are beginning to think about their class item for our “Carols on the Oval” which is always a much loved event. Students are busily preparing props, songs and costumes.
Students are also getting excited about the upcoming Spring Stroll on Thursday, 9th November. Please be aware that only students with protective eye wear (goggles, protective glasses) and a white T-shirt will be able to participate in the Colour Run component of the event. There will be many other fun obstacles and activities on offer for all students. It is a great afternoon and fabulous fundraiser with the main aim being to raise money for a playground upgrade.
Last week, I sent a letter to all families to inform you of the next phase in my career. As mentioned, I will be finishing at Punchbowl at the end of the year as I will begin starting up the new Legana Primary School in 2024. The Department is working towards a replacement Principal at Punchbowl, and I will keep families updated when I know more. I look forward to having some time to share information about all the wonderful aspects of our school with the new Principal once they are appointed.
Sickness
There is a lot of illness going around school, currently we have students away with gastro, Conjunctivitis, COVID, and colds and flu like symptoms. Please remember that children should stay home if they are unwell. Teachers are obligated to ring parents if students present unwell at school.
Swimming Carnival
Last Thursday we held our Grade 3-6 Swimming Carnival and it was wonderful to have an exciting and fun filled day with perfect weather conditions. A big congratulations to every student who participated. The final House points were “Esk” with 444 points and “Tamar” on 312 points. A huge thank you to all the staff and most importantly Mrs Frerk and Miss Bannon for organising events. Grade 5-6 students selected to represent our school in the LSSSA Carnival will be notified in coming weeks of which events they will be participating in on Friday, 10th November.
Basketball Weekends
This weekend we will begin the annual inter school basketball competitions, with our Grade 5/6 teams competing first and then our Grade 3/4 Teams competing on 11th and 12th November. I would like to thank Mrs Frerk for all her organisation of the teams and our involvement in this competition. I would especially like to thank the parents who nominated to be coaches and team managers over these weekends and also the many parents who will transporting children to and from games and supporting from the sidelines. Basketball Tasmania, unfortunately had not released the roster for this weekend’s games until today and we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. Students participating should bring home a letter this afternoon advising times and venues. Parents can also access game fixtures via PlayHQ.
Sip and Paint
Last Friday night our School Association organised a Sip and Paint night. The main aim of the evening was to build connections with our families in a fun and social evening. It was lovely to have Anna, Miss Richardson, Taleah, Mrs Jones, and Miss Bennett join me as staff members attending and joining in with all the fun and frivolity of painting our masterpieces, chatting to parents and community members. A huge thankyou to Naomi Will who was the main organiser of the event along with members of our School Association who helped set up, serve drinks, and enjoy the night.

Fire Education
This week, Firefighter Aaron has been at school teaching students about fire safety and how families can prevent and prepare in the event of a fire. I am sure the Fire Evacuation Plans being developed by your child will assist you greatly at home.
National Student Wellbeing Program Chaplain or Student Wellbeing Officer
Punchbowl Primary School works hard to support all our students. We are very aware that we currently only have our Social Worker working three days a fortnight with students who have been referred. As a school we have been looking at ways to support our student wellbeing and exploring external agencies. Some of the programs that we are currently involved with is a Creative Arts Therapist funded by Variety Club and engaging our Teacher Assistants in some flexible learning programs. Many schools apply for a National Student Wellbeing Program Chaplain or Student Wellbeing Officer and our school is currently investigating this option. School Chaplains are qualified youth workers who support young people in schools. They can be used to support students dealing with a range of issues and provide a listening ear and a caring presence. The application process will go through our School Association for further feedback. Parents please make contact with our School Association if you would like to make further comment.
Student Free Day
All state schools in the North have a Professional Learning Day on Friday, 3rd November. Our teachers will be working on our school’s Strategic Plan and participating in professional learning. The following Monday, 6th November is a Public Holiday, so we look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Tuesday, 7th November.
Liz O'Donahue - Principal
All children in Tasmania have a right to be known, safe, well and learning. We are highly committed to the safety of all students at our school.
Earlier this month, DECYP launched the Tell Someone initiative, to raise awareness in the community about child sexual abuse and grooming.
The Tell Someone website gives children and young people clear advice on what to do in situations where they feel worried, unsafe or unsure. It also gives adults advice and support on how to respond if they suspect or know a child is being groomed or sexually abused or is at risk of harm.
Please visit the website, read the information, and try to find a suitable time to talk with your children about this issue and the resources available. It’s important that you both understand the possible signs of sexual abuse or grooming behaviour, and how to stay safe online and offline.
If reading this information has caused you distress, please visit DECYP’s website for a list of support services.
Please contact the school if you have any questions about this information.
The Student Assistance Scheme (STAS) provides assistance to low income families towards the cost of levies for students enrolled in a school from Kindergarten through to year 12.
STAS is provided through school and college resourcing rather than payments direct to families.

- Services Australia – Centrelink Health Care Card
- Services Australia – Centrelink Low Income Health Care Card

Financial assistance
- Families on low incomes who meet the eligibility conditions of the Student Assistance Scheme (STAS) will not be required to pay school levies. Grandparents raising grandchildren may also be eligible for STAS.
- Families who are not eligible for STAS, but who may experience financial hardship should talk to the school about payment arrangements and other financial assistance which may help.
- School staff understand that financial matters are highly sensitive, so your questions will remain completely confidential.
- These matters will also be dealt with directly with you and not through your child.
- Your child’s participation in learning will not be affected.
Where can I get more information?
- Talk to the school business manager or principal at your child’s school.
- Contact the Department for Education, Children and Young People, Finance and Budget Services on 1800 827 055 or email stas@decyp.tas.gov.au
- For information on Centrelink assistance programs, contact Centrelink’s Youth and Student Services on 13 24 90 or visit the Services Australia website.
Alternatively, parents/guardians who have not applied for STAS previously (and do not have an existing STAS file) can apply online for STAS 2024 at Student Assistance Scheme (STAS) or simply Google STAS to be taken to the link.
Letters advising of STAS approval (or otherwise) will be posted to all families with existing files in the STAS database in mid-November.
If a parent/guardian has received STAS in 2023 and wishes to add a new/additional student to their STAS record they simply need to email their name, the student’s full name, date of birth, school, and grade in 2024 and we will add them to the existing STAS file.

Keeping yourself and others safe
We must all continue to play our part in being COVID safe. While the vaccine is an important measure in our response to COVID-19, it is part of a suite of things we need to do – including maintaining our COVID-safe behaviours:
- Stay at least 1.5 metres away from others;
- Wash your hands often with soap and warm water;
- Stay at home if you are unwell;
- Get tested for COVID-19 if you have any cold or flu-like symptoms; and
- Be aware of, and follow, current gathering, business and travel restrictions.
- Practise good hygiene, such as covering coughs and sneezes and washing hands
- If you or your child do get sick, stay at home until symptoms have passed, even if a COVID test is negative
Remember, symptoms include fever, tiredness, cough, headache, sore throat, sniffling and sneezing.
To keep our school safe, we are still:
- continuing with increased cleaning
- making sure there is plenty of soap, sanitiser and tissues available
- applying restrictions to large gatherings of adults and encouraging physical distancing
- requiring visitors to check-in on our sites
For the latest updates on the COVID-19 restrictions in Tasmania and across Australia, visit http://www.coronavirus.tas.gov.au.

Turning up matters
Welcome back to Term 4! We hope you enjoyed school holidays, and are ready for another exciting term.
We all want the best for our children – for their futures to be as bright as possible. Showing up every day to school really matters. It gives your child every chance to learn, grow and find their interests.
This last stretch of the school year can sometimes be tricky. Keep it up, because each day is another chance to:
- be around friends
- learn new things
- find interests
- create dream futures (whatever that may be!).
If you’re looking for tips on how to create better attendance habits, visit the Anything can happen website.
Please always talk to us if you’re having trouble getting your child to school. We’re here to help.
There are still families who are not benefitting from the NBN in Northern Tasmania.
The Australian Goverment has committed to the School Student Broadband Initiative and has asked NBN to implement the Government's initiative to provide internet access, via participating internet service providers delivered over nbn's wholesale broadband network.
The School Student Boroadband Initiative aims to boost education opportunities by providing up to 30,000 Australian eligible familes with school aged children (K-12) with free nbn-powered broadband internet at home for 12 months.
To be eligible for the School Student Broadband Initiate, familes must:
- Have a child living at home that is enrolled in an Australian school in 2023.
- Not have an active nbn network internet service at hoem. Having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibilty.
- Be referred by a nominating organisation.
- Live in a premises that can access the nbn network.
Should you wish to apply, please contact the school office and they will forward on your details.

After lunch once a week for 3 Thursday’s, 3-4 Dykman went down to a spot at the bottom of the ECE playground to make an eye-catching place to plant trees. We worked with Mr Brock Kerslake and some of his students from the Big Picture School to plant 120 trees. We measured out a 25m2 space to make a micro climate. It’s also a space where you can have time with yourself around nature. There is also a narrow walk way like an alley in a city or town, but is way more beautiful. This will also definitely help nature grow and other plants around it bloom. When we do things like this, it helps people our age to learn and have fun. It’s also good for health to do things like this.
Our first session was about just helping moving mulch and flattening it out. The Big Picture students and Brock showed us what to do which really helped. Brock laid out some blocks to mark out the walk way so you could walk through. Our second amazing tree planting lesson was about planting small 2-5m native trees and shrubs that were all different. We started digging a small hole to plant the tree we chose with a partner. Once we had planted it, we got cardboard and a pair of sticks. After we put the cardboard around the plant and got the sticks and put them in the cardboard, there were holes in the cardboard to make it easy. Once our class had done that, we all hammered the sticks in so the cardboard wouldn’t push through the wind and blow away. In our last lesson we had loads of trees left so we just planted the left over trees in an empty space near the boundary fence. In the end we got a tree to take home and plant in our own gardens. We hope you go and check out our new school micro climate garden and enjoy it for many years to come. Thank you so much Brock and the students at Big Picture School for organising the planting and Mrs Shaw for organising the mulch!
