Punchbowl Primary School - Term 4 2023 - 24th November
liz.jpg
Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is hard to believe we are over halfway through our last term of school for 2023. This will be our last major newsletter for the year.  It is an incredibly busy term as I prepare the school for the new Principal, finalise all the Departmental documentation as well as harnessing all the moments I can, to be with students and engage in their learning and play. This week I have been finalising our Annual School Review with our Leadership team and we have been delighted to see the exceptional growth in our students’ learning targets. It is clear the tireless work of our teachers and leaders to improve pedagogy and teaching strategies has made a huge impact to our school wide results in NAPLAN and PAT. This year we made a conscious effort to get student voice data on what skills and dispositions have developed this year in Maths. Student quotes included:

“Don’t give up and show persistence when problems are hard”.

“I keep trying when it is hard”.

“Thinking about what the question is asking".

“Persistence”.

“Mistakes are good”.

“Explaining your thinking”.

“Listen to others and take on advice”.

Over the last week I have been asking students to give us feedback on some possible playground designs. The School Association combined with school funds and a Well-being Grant are going towards replacing the existing wooden structure in the Early Childhood playground with a new structure that is similar in size and shape encompassing elements the students value and love. We hope that the structure will be erected early next year.

The weeks are getting busy as we prepare for some major events and celebrations. We have our Carols on the Oval, Grade 6 Leavers Dinner, the Grade 6 Celebration Evening along with our end of year Picnics. Please see dates enclosed in the newsletter.

Two weeks ago, we held our Spring Stroll and Colour Run.  I was incredibly proud of all the work that our Student Leadership Board had undertaken to make the Spring Stroll happen. The students with the guidance of Mrs Airey put on an incredible event. In doing so, this event raised close to $6500 to go towards upgrading our playground equipment and school resources.

Students throughout the school have commented that it was the best day ever!

Carols on the Oval

Once again, we will be holding a ‘Carols on the Oval’ on the 7th December.  The event will begin at 5.30pm aiming to finish by 7.30pm.  We encourage you to bring your own picnic blanket or chair.  There will be an area designated for chairs and families on picnic rugs will sit at the front.  Our School Association met this week to plan a few fundraisers for this event, one being the BBQ which was a huge success last year along with a licenced bar, a donut van and a Christmas craft stall.   There will be both cash and card payment options available.  The School Association are looking for some volunteers to help with the running of these stallsif you can assist please give the office your name and contact details and we will gladly pass it on to the committee. To help with cost of the sound system we are asking for a gold coin donation per family on entry.

Each class is busy preparing an item to share alongside the class items we will have items from both our Taiko Drummers and our instrumental players from Esk Band.

Some off-street parking below the oval will be made available for your convenience.

I am looking forward to spending this evening with families as this will be my last event with our school community before I leave Punchbowl. We hope all our families and friends can join us on the night. We have everything crossed for beautiful weather.

LSSSA Swimming Carnival

Mrs Jones accompanied our LSSSA Swimming Team to Riverside Pool where they competed in Division 1.  I am delighted to let everyone know we came second, what an incredible effort competing against schools with a much bigger population to draw on. Well done to all our competitors representing our school with such pride and enthusiasm.

Remembrance Day

On Saturday the 11th November, I accompanied members of the Student Leadership Board to the Remembrance Day service at the Launceston Cenotaph.  Our students were once again impeccable leaders and represented our school respectfully and with great pride.

Grade 6 Orientation Day

On Wednesday, 23rd November our Grade 6 students were involved in an Orientation Day across the State High Schools.  Our students went off to explore their new schools with an air of excitement and a few nerves. Students came back with many happy stories to tell about their engaging experiences.

Dance Fever

Yesterday, our Grade 5 and 6 students participated in the annual Dance Fever production. They were involved in both a matinée performance and an evening performance. Both performances were held at the Door of Hope.

I would like to thank Georgia Poxen from Launceston College for working with our students. It was a wonderful show and it was great to see so many of our students involved. A huge thank you to Mrs Frerk and Mrs Jones for supporting students at the evening performance, without their help we would not be able to offer this experience.

Triathlon Challenge

Today, we had 10 students represent Punchbowl in the Primary Schools Triathlon Challenge in Devonport.  A big thank you to all our families who have supported their children to attend this event. It is great to see student’s passions and interests being supported.  Thank you to all those involved and thankyou to our students who represented our school.

School Association Meeting

Our last meeting for 2023 will be held on Wednesday, 13th December at 7:00pm.

All children in Tasmania have a right to be known, safe, well and learning. We are highly committed to the safety of all students at our school.

Earlier this month, DECYP launched the Tell Someone initiative, to raise awareness in the community about child sexual abuse and grooming.

The Tell Someone website gives children and young people clear advice on what to do in situations where they feel worried, unsafe or unsure. It also gives adults advice and support on how to respond if they suspect or know a child is being groomed or sexually abused or is at risk of harm.

Please visit the website, read the information, and try to find a suitable time to talk with your children about this issue and the resources available.  It’s important that you both understand the possible signs of sexual abuse or grooming behaviour, and how to stay safe online and offline.

If reading this information has caused you distress, please visit DECYP’s website for a list of support services.

Please contact the school if you have any questions about this information.

          Keeping yourself and others safe

          We must all continue to play our part in being COVID safe. While the vaccine is an important measure in our response to COVID-19, it is part of a suite of things we need to do – including maintaining our COVID-safe behaviours:

          • Stay at least 1.5 metres away from others;
          • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water;
          • Stay at home if you are unwell;
          • Get tested for COVID-19 if you have any cold or flu-like symptoms; and
          • Be aware of, and follow, current gathering, business and travel restrictions.
          • Practise good hygiene, such as covering coughs and sneezes and washing hands
          • If you or your child do get sick, stay at home until symptoms have passed, even if a COVID test is negative

          Remember, symptoms include fever, tiredness, cough, headache, sore throat, sniffling and sneezing.

          To keep our school safe, we are still:

          • continuing with increased cleaning
          • making sure there is plenty of soap, sanitiser and tissues available
          • applying restrictions to large gatherings of adults and encouraging physical distancing
          • requiring visitors to check-in on our sites

          For the latest updates on the COVID-19 restrictions in Tasmania and across Australia, visit  http://www.coronavirus.tas.gov.au.
