Student's last day for year

Dear Parents and Carers,

Over the last couple of weeks,  some of our grade 3-6 students have been involved in collaborative tasks that required them to build and design an outdoor play kitchen and ball run for the playground. Students worked with Mr Kerslake to design and build these projects.  It has been a delight to see these projects completed and create a much needed creative element to our playground. The children love making meals for teachers and their friends with the leaves and pine bark.  Dramatic play is important in building children’s co-operative skills and oral language through fun and non-threatening play experiences. A big thank you to all the students and Mr Kerslake, the final products are wonderful and are already very popular.

Last Friday night we held our annual Trivia night; it was wonderful to see so many parents and friends of our community enjoying the night.  We were able to raise much-needed funds to go towards a wish list of items that teachers needed in their classrooms, some of these items included guided reading sets, new home readers, magnetic letters and games.  We would sincerely like to thank our school community for supporting this event.  I would also like to thank Nikki Daking and her team of parents for their hard work in organising this event. It was a great night! Thank you.

This week we have begun the annual Swimming and Water Safety Program for student in grades 3-5.  Mrs Bent and the swimming teachers work hard at the pool to ensure that all the students involved achieve goals related to their individual swimming ability.  Swimming is a skill that is necessary in our beautiful island state and children feeling comfortable and able to save themselves in cases of emergency is paramount.  We hope that these lessons support your child to be safe in and around the water.

NAPLAN

Earlier this year all students in years 3 and 5 participated the in the nationwide NAPLAN  testing.  Parents should have received a sealed letter home this week outlining your child’s results.  Please be proud of your child’s efforts with this testing regime. Some children find test situations very difficult and as such may not have performed as well as we know they can.  Fortunately, our teachers have a wealth of knowledge about your children and are able to support their learning further.  We are very proud of all our students and as a school; we are pleased to report that once again our school is performing at a very high standard.

If your child is turning 5 in 2020 or you know of someone who is, they are eligible to start Kindergarten in 2020.   Shortly, we will be organising our Term 4 Pre-Kindergarten sessions for children who have enrolled & completed the required enrolment form.  Only children who have returned Enrolment Forms are invited to attend these sessions. If you haven’t yet completed an Enrolment Form, they are available from our school office.

The Department of Education also require us to be provided with original or certified copies of evidence of the following, as soon as possible so your child can attend these sessions

  1. The student’s identity – Birth certificate or Passport
  2. The identity of the enrolling parent/guardian – Drivers Licence
  3. The students residential address – lease agreement, telephone, utility account
  4. Immunisation records

On Monday 2nd September grade 3-6 students took part in an Interactive Forensic Science Performance. Students had to use their forensic science skills to complete a mock forensic report. They explored DNA, finger printing and colleciing evidence in order to solve a crime. It was a great hands on learning experience.

Grade 5/6 Frerk/Bent have been invited to be a part of project called the Complimentary Caravan, in conjunction with The Junction Arts Festival.

Each Thursday students take 10 minutes out of their day to ‘thank’, ‘compliment’ or ‘show kindness’ to other members in their class as a part of Thoughtful Thursday.

Rose Turtle is the creator of the project Comlimentary Caravan and had heard of our work in the classroom in regards to being kind to each other. Our students will contribute to Roses’s project by providing thoughtful, heart-felt compliment to be anonymously played through audio inside the Complimentary Caravan which will be present at The Junction Arts Festival.

Abby Bent and Bec Frerk encourage students and their families to head along to the festival to see/hear our classes wonderful work on display.

Junction Arts runs from 5th September to 8th September in Princes Square.
