Punchbowl Primary School - Term 2 2023 - 26th May
liz.jpg
Dear Parents and Guardians,

I have had the most wonderful return to Punchbowl Primary School over the last two weeks with lovely reactions from staff, students, and parents.   As I mentioned in assembly it feels very much like coming home.  It has been so nice to visit each of the classes and see the learning taking place.

 Cross Country

Last week we held the 3-6 Cross Country Carnival. We were fortunate to have a brisk but clear day for the races.  The motivation of our students to try their best was the best part of the day. I am pleased to announce that the winning team was Esk on 290 points, with Tamar coming second on 181 points.  Well done to every child that participated in the Cross Country and had a go.   For those students that qualified, the LSSSA Cross Country will be held at the Windsor Precinct from 12:20pm - 2:55pm on 2nd June.

After having to postpone the ECE Cross Country this week due to poor weather, we are looking forward to next Thursday when our younger students will race in their Cross Country.

A big thank you to Miss Bannon for all her organisation of these events and to all the parents for coming along to support our students.

Walk_Safely_To_School_Day.jpgWalk Safely to School

Last Friday it was ‘Walk Safely’ to school day, unfortunately due to having a number of staff unwell we were unable to help with a walking bus.  Stickers were given out to students walking to school.

Sickness at School

We have had many students and staff away with cold and flu like symptoms along with some positive COVID-19 cases over the last couple of weeks. Please remember the health advice is; If your child has cold or flu like symptoms, please do not send them to school. If you require any RAT test kits, please just call the office.

We also have several students with gastro and gastro symptoms. Please remember that anyone who has had a gastro bug should not return to school until at least 48 hours after the last vomit.

We are currently experiencing many problems when trying to find relief teachers, we try our upmost to find replacement teachers, however if there comes a time when we are unable to find a relief teacher for all classes, we will have no other option but to collapse classes and spread students into classes with lower numbers. We appreciate your understanding with this.

Class Assemblies

It was so lovely to attend the last two assemblies, one hosted by 3-4 Dykman and the other hosted by 1-2 Millen. The students have absolutely loved having their turn to speak in front of everyone and share their work. The benefits are enormous for all, opportunities like this develop students’ oral language, confidence and pride in themselves along with developing students capabilities as a respectful audience. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring our community together.  We thank all the parents and friends who come along and support our assemblies.

Please refer to the calendar for the dates of our next assemblies.

Term 2 Reporting and Communication

In Term 2, beginning the 26th  June to 29th June, parents will be invited to attend parent teacher meetings. A booking system will be opened soon where parents will be able to book an appointment online.  At these meetings teachers will have a conversation focusing on learning progress, application to learning, well-being, and /or learning plan goals. Science, Music, P.E and Japanese teachers will be available for parent teacher meetings on their workdays and welcome any appointments.

In week 9 on Friday the 23rd of June, parents can expect to receive a summative report which will be sent home with students in Grade 1 through to Grade 6.  An achievement rating will be given for English, Maths and Science. This report will not contain any comments.

Music and P.E teachers will give and effort and behaviour rating for their subjects for Grade 1-6 students.

Kinder and Prep teachers are not required to write a summative report until the end of the year in Term 4.  However, both Kinder and Prep teachers will be meeting with parents for parent teacher meetings.

Futsal competition

This week we had two teams playing in a Northern Futsal competition on Tuesday and Wednesday representing our School. Our grade 3/4 team had an outstanding result coming away as the overall winners. The grade 6 team fought hard and won 1 of the 4 games played.

A huge thank you to Jo Freeland and Shelley-Ann Cassidy for organising and managing the teams, and also to Zane Patmore and Tim Cassidy for coaching.

On Thursday 6th July the Student Leadership Board are holding a Giggle Day to raise money for Camp Quality. This will be a free day day and students are asked to bring along a gold coin donation.

Camp Quality’s Giggle Day is an opportunity for our school to have fun, fundraise and provide age-appropriate cancer education for our students. Throughout June students will be encouraged to write and share jokes to create smiles, inspire laughter and improve the quality of life for kids facing cancer.

Funds raised through our school's Giggle Day will help families build optimism and resilience through community, education, and fun. Camp Quality is there for kids (0-15) dealing with their own cancer diagnosis, or the diagnosis of a sibling, parent or carer, every step of the way.

Public Health Service has advised of gastroenteritis (gastro) outbreaks in the community, including in schools, and would like to remind schools to please remain vigilant for gastroenteritis and to put in place appropriate measures.

Infectious gastroenteritis (‘gastro’) is a short-term illness caused by infection and inflammation of the digestive system. Symptoms may include diarrhoea (frequent or loose stools), vomiting and abdominal pain. There are many causes of gastroenteritis, with the most common being a viral infection.

Infectious gastroenteritis is spread very easily. It may be spread via vomit and faeces (poo) of an infected person or contaminated objects, food or water.

Infection control recommendations:

  • Children or staff who become unwell with vomiting and/or diarrhoea while at school should go home.
  • Children and staff should not return to school until at least 48 hours after symptoms have resolved.
  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after any contact with a sick person.
  • Staff to remind children to wash their hands before eating and after using the toilet.

Additional information can be found at https://www.health.tas.gov.au/publications/viral-gastro-fact-sheet.

Looking forward to seeing all our Launching into Learning friends this term. All children 0-4 are welcome to attend our sessions.

Keeping yourself and others safe

We must all continue to play our part in being COVID safe. While the vaccine is an important measure in our response to COVID-19, it is part of a suite of things we need to do – including maintaining our COVID-safe behaviours:

  • Stay at least 1.5 metres away from others;
  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water;
  • Stay at home if you are unwell;
  • Get tested for COVID-19 if you have any cold or flu-like symptoms; and
  • Be aware of, and follow, current gathering, business and travel restrictions.
  • Practise good hygiene, such as covering coughs and sneezes and washing hands
  • If you or your child do get sick, stay at home until symptoms have passed, even if a COVID test is negative

Remember, symptoms include fever, tiredness, cough, headache, sore throat, sniffling and sneezing.

To keep our school safe, we are still:

  • continuing with increased cleaning
  • making sure there is plenty of soap, sanitiser and tissues available
  • applying restrictions to large gatherings of adults and encouraging physical distancing
  • requiring visitors to check-in on our sites

For the latest updates on the COVID-19 restrictions in Tasmania and across Australia, visit  http://www.coronavirus.tas.gov.au.
